Compare last year’s description with this year’s work

Direct Line tells policyholders to report circumstances that change, and its van guidance specifically discusses changes in job and use. A renewal is a practical opportunity to read the facts again. Do not assume that an old “business” description includes a new delivery activity.

Has the van started visiting more sites? Is stock or customer property carried now? Have another driver, signwriting, a rack or a trailer been added? Separate facts that have already changed from plans that have not started.

Check records and dates directly

Use the current invitation, schedule, certificate and provider questions. Check start and end arrangements and whether any action is required for renewal. Direct Line describes both automatic and manual renewal options for its product; another provider’s process can differ.

Retrieve NCD evidence and relevant driving or insurance-history information. Follow the new form’s time periods and definitions. A record that was complete last year may require another answer this year.

Keep renewal and a change request distinct

If work has already changed, contact the current insurer about that change rather than waiting for the renewal comparison to deal with it. Ask when an agreed amendment applies.

The worksheet is for preparing questions and documents. It does not cancel, renew, amend or replace a policy. If you must drive now, check the current arrangements with the insurer.

Working list

  • Recheck actual work and all journey types.
  • Check drivers, parking, mileage and modifications.
  • Separate vehicle, tools and goods arrangements.
  • Read the invitation and exact policy dates.
  • Ask the current insurer about changes before relying on a renewal.

What this does not establish

We do not publish a cheapest time to renew or a savings estimate. A document-reading checklist does not establish an uninterrupted period of cover.
